The Elder God is a major character in the Legacy of Kain series, first introduced in Legacy of. Their bloodline trickled away, until only one of the Ancients remained – sustained solely by obligation and his unfaltering faith in the old prophesies."―Vorador — Listen(file info)[src]The ancient vampires, also referred to simply as vampyres, the Ancients or the winged race, were one of the three original sapient species known to exist before Nosgoth's recorded history. Considered Nosgoth's most pure, wise and noble civilization, the ancient vampires came to worship the Elder God and exalted his doctrine, preaching their belief in his purifying cycle of birth, death and rebirth through his Wheel of Fate. When the Hylden refused to submit to the Wheel, the two races became bitter rivals, resulting in the catastrophic Vampire- Hylden war, which lasted for a millennium. It led to the raising of the Pillars of Nosgoth, the inception of the Circle of Nine, and, effectively, the eradication of both species from Nosgoth's Material Realm. Originally, the Ancients were mortal creatures, but when they were afflicted with the blood curse by their Hylden adversaries, they became sterile immortals with supernatural powers, forced to drink blood to survive. Desperate to preserve their bloodline in some form, they passed their curse on to Nosgoth's humans before becoming extinct. Though vampires were prevalent in the Legacy of Kain games from Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the ancient vampires were not introduced to the series' mythology until Soul Reaver 2, in which their last surviving specimen - Janos Audron - made his first appearance. Ancient vampires subsequently figured into the storyline of Blood Omen 2 and, most prominently, Legacy of Kain: Defiance. As devout worshippers of the Elder God, the Ancient Vampires believed in his doctrine completely. Unquestioning followers of his every word, they converted the other races of Nosgoth to worship their Elder God. The Humans became followers also, but it was the race known as the Hylden, and their refusal to be converted that spelled the dawn of the dark times of Nosgoth. Unwilling to accept a religion they deemed wrong, the feud they had quickly grew into a war that after a thousand years of battle proved equally devastating for both races. To end the war both sides devised a way to finish the war once and for all. While the Hylden designed a Device capable of eliminating all life on Nosgoth except them, the Vampires used their magical skills to tear a whole in the fabric of reality to a parallel realm known as the Demon Dimension in order to cast their adversaries in. Countless generations of Vampires and Hylden had died in this war and yet to end the war both races plotted to completely erase the other from Nosgoth altogether. Nine sorcerers among the Vampires banished the Hylden to the Demon Dimension and, to ensure they could not return, raised the Pillars of Nosgoth to seal the passages between the two realms shut for as long as they stood. As the banishment was completed the Hylden cursed their enemies with their final breath. However they did not fully understand the true nature of their curse until after the dust had settled. They had been made sterile, effectively making their race unable to rebuild and prosper after the war, as well as being given a horrible bloodlust. Ancients Vampires Murals (SR2)It was the final part of the curse that truly condemned the Vampires as a race as it struck them withimmortality. The effects of this were felt immediately as their Elder God, and his Wheel of Fate, turned his back on them falling silent. The now immortal Vampires, having never been cut off from their God, slowly went mad with anguish. Many committed suicide in order to return to the Wheel of Fate. Those that choose to carry on immortal and godless where governed by the original members of the Circle for a time. In time the Ancient Guardians also met an end, although it is not known if they committed suicide as their past brethren did or in an as yet unknown feud which resulted in them being entombed, which caused the Pillars to select new Guardians at birth. Since the Vampires did not give birth anymore the Pillars selected Human replacements which caused distress amongst the Vampires . The abduction, turning and rebellion. Knowing that the Pillars had to remain under their rule they discovered a means of passing their curse on to Humans and the human born Guardians. But inevitably the Human Guardians opposed this ritual forced upon them and rebelled. In the end, Mortanius the Guardian of Death and Moebius the Guardian of Time, led the revolt against the vampiric members of the Pillar Guardians and overthrew them along with their Ancient forefathers. The Ancients and their history slowly died out over the ages, and the only one to survive long enough to be seen in the games was the secret tenth Guardian (of the Reaver), Janos Audron, who commissioned and guarded the Soul Reaver, a weapon intended to be used by a prophesied hero who would one day restore the Pillars to the rule of the Vampires. With Janos Audron being cast into the Demon Dimension in Blood Omen 2 by the Hylden Lord, the Ancient Vampires exist only in Nosgoth in the memories of the ageless or within myth and legend. Ancient Mural. The Ancients were almost identical to the traditional imagery of an Angel just with very striking differences. The Ancients had blue skin which ranged from baby blue, turquoise and slightly darker blue. Their hair was usually black while the colour of their eyes may have been as varied as humans. However the eyes of the Tenth Guardian, Janos Audron, were yellow so their eyes may have been far more varied than human eyes could have ever been. Their most distinguishing features was their magnificently beautiful black feathered wings that extended from their lower back which effortlessly provided them with flight, a testament to just how powerful they were. Another defining feature of the Ancients, albeit possibly after the infliction of the curse, was their fangs. These fangs could have easily punctured flesh allowing quick access to blood. An interesting development was the devolving of Janos Audron into The Beast. When consistently drained of blood by the Hylden in order to sustain the Mass his weakened body transformed into the Beast. If this solely happened as a side effect of being denied blood, something his and his race become dependant on due to the blood curse, is highly possible as it is highly unlikely this would have happened to the benevolent Ancients of the past. It is also highly probable that, if put through the same trauma, other Ancients may have also become beasts just like Janos. Concept Art of The Three Spears with early names. Though not the direct creators of the legendary blade the Reaver, it is known that they sanctioned its creation at the hands of the weapon smith Vorador. They also fused it with their curse, giving it their blood lust effectively making it into the Blood Reaver, a weapon that drained its opponents dry and destined to be the weapon of the Scion of Balance. They may have also been the creators, or again ordered the creation of, three spears that murals have suggested were wielded by the Vampires. The spears were named the 'Blood Drinker' Artifact, the 'Heart Puller' Artifact and the 'Soul Stealer' Artifact. Much like the Blood Reaver, which became the Soul Reaver, they may have had vampire energies as well. Centuries later they were all in the care of Vorador in his Mansion and they were used by Raziel to create a portal to the Water Forge. It is also highly likely that the original builders of the Forges were in fact the Ancient Vampires also. The Fire Forge beneath Janos Audron's aerie may be evidence of this. Background. Edit. The term "Vampire" has been hinted to be the original name of the species before they were inflicted with the Blood curse. Feral humans in the Vampire Citadel clearly use the name,[DEF- C7][DEF- C9] and it seems that over time it has became associated with the 'children' created by the Ancients when they passed on their curse. Welcome to Vampire’s Curse Island. First thing you’ll see is a woman crying. Talk to her and she’ll say she’s crying over her daughter (Katya) who is missing, along with her boyfriend (Christopher). Rumor is, they’ve been taken to Bram’s castle. And you might notice if you have volume on, you’ll HEAR the thunder and rain pattering on the streets. Grand. Umbrella anyone? Oh, and if you talk to people, you’ll see the town is obsessing over vampires ever since the disappearance. Especially the teenagers. Go to the right past the old lady. You’ll see a teenage boy sitting down. Talk to him. That’s Christopher. He says that Katya has been taken by Count Bram and to the castle. You ask him if he’s going back for her and he responds with THIS. Um… hello? Aren’t you supposed to be the loyal boyfriend, Chris? Oh well, we’re on our own. For this next part, you can refer to this handy map regarding where to go – or see below for step- by- step instructions. Go up a little bit and you’ll see from behind you… a WOLF. Wolfy doesn’t like you. The first thing he does is dash and attack you. Don’t stay still. Run! Run towards the tree and click on the hole in it. Click on the branch right when Wolfy runs towards you. He’ll be knocked over. Traverse up and to the left. When you land on the branch, Wolfy is back, and he BREAKS the branch from underneath you. Oh, and you get a Log. Go back up and to the left. Hang on to those vines. Go up and to the right. Quickly jump on the vine hanging over the gap and run right when Wolfy passes you from the right. When he attacks you and goes back to the bridge, click on the rope at the beginning of the bridge to send Wolfy plummeting bye- bye. Then, head to the next area on the right. You’ll arrive at a graveyard, and the rain resumes. Go into the mausoleum with the green door, and you’ll see a coffin inside. Creepy. The Latin message translates to “Remember all the lovers.”Grab the Teen Vampire Novel (red book) on the coffin and the Crowbar resting on the side. Go outside and grab the pipe resting on the side of the building. Carry it over to the reddish- pink pump, and jump on it, pumping water out. Position yourself so the water goes to the little ditch there. You should be able to swim to the other side now. Get to the other side, go up and enter through the hole. It’s an arched entrance without a door. Now, it’s time to push some boulders around. The first boulder is right there for you to push over to the holes of spouting water to the right. Then, you’ll see another boulder stuck in some other rocks. Get that out of there using the Crowbar and push it to the right until it stays put in another hole. Go to the right and climb up the platforms. There’s the last boulder! Push it over. It’ll roll onto the last hole. Go over to the remaining spout, which will now be spurting water at a much higher height, and you’ll be able to reach an open window. Enter through the shattered window. You’ll enter into a dark room, only lit by ashes and a few pieces of coal. Click “Use” on the Log and Teen Vampire Novel. Jump on the pumper three times and the fire will be a nice size. Click on a purple candle and click on the fire. The candle will light, and you have a limited time before it goes out. If it goes out, light another candle. Go over to the right and push the ladder over to the left bookshelf. Climb the ladder and jump on top of the bookcase. Jump to the left and land on the ledge on the wall, then hop up to the chandelier. Once you land, and as long as your candle hasn’t run out, the chandelier will automatically light. Repeat this with the other three chandeliers (there are a total of four chandeliers) by jumping onto them (you may need to jump on other things first to reach them). Tip: Instead of lighting your candle from the fireplace, wait until you get to the chandelier you last lit, then light it there and get to the next chandelier. Get down from the last chandelier and use your Crowbar on the chained door. This will provide an easy exit for when you need to leave. Go over to the left and pick up the Glass Eye on the floor that you couldn’t see before. It’s beside the suit of armor to the left of the fireplace. Go up the bookcase on the left using the ladder and use the glass eye on the tiger head missing the eye. The tiger mouth will open and reveal the Armory Key. Use the key on the door on the right to open the door to the armory. When you enter, you’ll see a whole bunch of stuff… a pike, some armor, a training dummy, a crossbow… wait, a CROSSBOW? Gimme that! Well, get the Crossbow on the wall. Go over to the cannon and click on one of the cannonballs. You’ll put it in the cannon. Go back to the hallway, get a candle and light it. Quickly return to the armory and go to the cannon. It’ll automatically light and shoot the cannonball. It’ll fling over facing the other direction. Repeat this two more times. On the second firing, the cannonball will roll away into the hallway. Roll the cannonball in front of the fireplace to make it red- hot, then grab the poker stick and push it into the dumbwaiter. The third cannonball will shoot straight into the ceiling. Another area will be revealed! Go up past the cannon and pick up the Bucket. Exit the armory, leave the great hall, and you’ll be outside. Go over to the geyser of water and use the bucket to fill it with some water. Return to the armory and climb up to where you got the bucket. Climb up to the top part of the plant there, then take out your crossbow and shoot an arrow at the left wall. Climb up your arrow to get to the floor above. You’ll see a sad- looking plant in need of light and water. Use the crowbar on the window to get the light in there. Next, use your bucket of water on it. All of a sudden, it becomes this big vine, and you can now exit through the window. You’ll end up back outside. Follow the vine right up the stairs and into another window. You’re in some sort of lab, and it’s filled with tomatoes! Sliced tomatoes. Diced tomatoes. Tomato juice. Whew. Pick up Count Bram’s Notebook on the table. Inside, it mentions some sort of formula to change vampires back into human form. Wow. Next, click on the tomato bat, and your head will transform into a tomato vampire bat! Don’t worry, this wears off after a while. But since you can fly, reach up and grab the Garlic on the top shelf. Exit through the door and enter through the door on the right. Go up, all the way to the top, and talk to the girl in the cage. It’s Katya! She’ll say that we need to cure Count Bram of his vampirism. She’ll tell you to look in the library for a book called Root Causes. Leave the chamber and jump off the tower so that you end up outside the doors of the main entrance. Enter, and push the ladder over to the right bookshelf. Climb it and pick up the Root Causes Book. If you examine it, it’ll tell you that mandrake root grows in tall, dark places. Go back outside, and go left, through the arch and back to the castle grounds (check your map if you’re not sure). Climb up the tree to your right and shoot arrows at the wall with your crossbow. Make a little ladder for yourself so you can jump to the platform just to the left to reach the Mandrake Root. Now return to Count Bram’s laboratory by climbing the giant vine back into the window leading to the lab. Once inside, go all the way to the right, and click on the little lever to pull up the dumbwaiter. When the cannonball comes up, it’ll roll out, and warm the wolfsbane sitting in the green jar marked by a skull and crossbones so you can now pick up the Wilted Wolfsbane.
